A glimpse into my sketchbook: the good, the bad, the random. With running commentary.

A quick study of an ice cream van in sunny south Birmingham. I completed a pencil sketch on scene before digitally painting over it back home.

An apple. With expletives. Ever wonder what an artist draws when they’ve got no ideas? Now you know. The important thing is to just make something everyday. Show up as though it’s a job, whether you’re feeling it or not.

I just… dug… this digital painting out of the archives. The goal was to try and capture a mood with subtlety. I believe this was actually an old-school “Inktober” prompt.

Ah, the weird giraffe. I remember painting you.

From time to time I seem to end up painting surreal dark fantasy. I’m not putting this into my “fine art" portfolio on the basis that I did this for fun and nothing more. That being said, if I somehow become “known” as a dark fantasy painter, hell yeah this was always intended to be a portfolio piece!

The initial sketch.

The Zdzisław Beksiński painting that inspired my giraffe.

Another from the digital archives. I think this was another Inktober prompt. The prompt was probably “Death” and I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of the “Death Dance” so that is what I painted here.
